질문 관계를 떠나서 AP Lit 공부하는 한국 학생들은 제가 항상 응원합니다~ 좋은 결과 있기를 바랍니다. ^^

일단 poem 라인을 보겠습니다.

     But, when thedays of golden dreams had perished,

     And evenDespair was powerless to destroy;

     Then did Ilearn how existence could be cherished,

     Strengthenedand fed without the aid of joy.

25  Then did Icheck the tears of useless passion—

      Weaned myyoung soul from yearning after thine;

      Sternlydenied its burning wish to hasten

     Down to thattomb already more than mine.

     And, evenyet, I dare not let it languish,

30  Dare notindulge in memory’s rapturous pain;

     Once drinkingdeep of that divinest anguish,

      How could I seek the empty world again?

여기서 line 23에 learn 이라고 하고 25에 Then did I check 이라고 하며 useless passion 이라고 말합니다. 여기서 learn 에 관련된 느낌을 스스로 refute 하는 느낌이 나지 않나요? 저 learn 이라는 단어 하나 때문에 instructive 라고 할수는 없습니다. 분명 스스로 reconsider 하며 resignation tone 을 느낄수 있기 때문이죠.

여기서 tempting 부분은 line 30 의 indulge 와 rapturous, 그리고  31번 divinest 라는 단어를 사용하며 얼마나 달콤한 아픔인지를 표현합니다. 그러니까 tempting 이 성립되는거죠. Pain 과 anguish 는 그냥 단순한 painful 이라고 한다면 poetic 한 글이 아니라 그냥 교과서 처럼 denotation 으로 쓴 글이 되어버립니다. 

Lit 클라스에서 Shakespeare 를 공부할때 Parting is such sweet sorrow 를 배우셨을텐데 여기서 oxymoron 을 쓰며 sorrow 가 단순한 sadness 가 아니라는 것을 알수 있듯, pain 과 anguish 를 설명하는 adjective (rapturous 와 divinest) 를 생각하며 이해해야 합니다. ^^

11번 문제 관련..

      Weaned my young soul from yearning after thine;

      Sternly denied its burning wish to hasten

     Down to that tomb already more than mine.

여기서 young soul 부터 이해를 해야 합니다. after thine (yours) 여기서 yearning after your soul 로 이해를 먼저 한다면 단순히 무덤을 찾아가는게 아니라는것을 알게됩니다. 영혼을 이야기 하는거지 단순 시체/무덤이 아닌거죠.

그리고.. hasten down to that tomb 이라고 했을때 Down 이라는 단어, 즉 내려간다는 말은 무덤을 찾아가는게 아니라 죽은 자들의 세상으로 (Hades 또는 underworld) 가고싶어하는 마음을 설명한거죠.. 윗 라인에 your soul 이라고 썼으니까요. 

그래서 단순한 visit to the grave 가 아닌 reunion after death 가 성립이 됩니다.

이해가 됐는지 궁금합니다 ^^

poem 을 읽을때는 단어의 dictionary meaning (denotation) 에 집중하지 말고 단어를 어떤 느낌으로 (connotation) 으로 사용했는지 이해하는게 더 중요합니다.
