Hello Mr. Bae.

I have been solving SAT practice exams and want your advice.

I aim above 1500 for SAT,

and this means that assuming I get 800 for math( which I will),

I need at least 700 for the critical reading and writing section.

I heard that this means max 6 wrong on reading and 3 wrong on writing... I want to get to that point.

In order to know my standing point, have tried total 3 practice tests.

1. Reading

The first test I tried was practice test #7.

I didn't time the reading section. It took me 100 minutes to finish the test and I got 2 wrong.

Of what I have gotten wrong, one I didn't know- graph-passage relationship- and one I misread the question.

Than, since I wanted to know my real reading score, I timed my test.

This time it was #8. I got total 9 wrong,

3 of them from the one passage, which I didn't comprehend well and 6 questions, which I didn't have time to solve.

Today, I took practice test #2.

This time I got 13 wrong.

I got 1 diction question wrong for the fiction passage

1 from  paired passage question

5 from one passage about women's right- (the fourth passage, I was on a rush)

and 6 of which I didn't have time to solve at the last passage.

From my results, I think I am pretty good at choosing the accurate answer.

My strong points are fiction and paired passages( though it takes long time).

But the problem is time.

Some passages would take me even 25 minutes, leaving me no time to read and answer the last passage.

I've learned to read only the least of gist of the idea that is able to help me answer on the course of lack of time, but I lack time.

I have went through your reading practice test lecture 2 times and my plans for improving reading was through the official practice tests.

Can you give me tips for overcoming lack of time?

2. Writing

I have only taken two writing test from the practice test. I timed exactly 35 minutes for both tests.

By the way, I am currently taking your writing foundation course, so I can get some help to improve certain concepts.

I took practice test #7,

I got 9 wrong. I analyzed the pattern that my wrong answers explode in number at the last passage.

I usually get Diction, sentence function wrong but for this test, along with these concepts,

I got verb tense, punctuation, transition, and idiom concepts incorrect.( I hardly get these wrong).

I took practice test #8.

I got 9 wrong.

3 from sentence function, 3 from transition, 1 from sentence arrangement, diction, clarification.

I think part of the reason I got SF, transition and sentence arrangement wrong is because I didn't think about the topics of both the questions and the passage for I did't have time.

I tend to lightly read everything, which is fine for some questions but not for some concepts. The big picture doesn't come into my thoughts.

My plan for writing is finish your writing practice exam course with the supplement of the foundation course.

And maybe relisten to the practice exam course.

Compared to reading, I haven't put much effort to writing, so I am not so desperate with writing yet.

I will act on my plans and will ask you for advice, if I still lack time for the writing section.

I feel much better after writing this questions to you.

Thank you!

Hey Haewon!

Good to hear you are working on the practice tests now~ that's a smart move =)

Yes...time management is a problem for many students.

The good news is that you only got 2 wrong without timing yourself. That shows that your comprehension level is strong.

The not-so-good news is that it took you 35 more minutes than you are allowed.

Time management strategy: 13 minutes per passage

1.  2-3 minutes to skim read to get the gist of the passage. You have to do your best to aim to finish your initial reading in under 3 minutes. Even if you don't understand the content fully, it's okay. As long as you have the general idea of the pasage. You can always go back to a section of the passage if a question refers that section to read more closely.

2.

10-11 minutes to answer the questions.

That gives you about 1 minute per question. I'm sure that there are some questions that only take you about 20-30 seconds because the answer is obvious. So, for the more challenging questions, don't spend more than 2 minutes answering those. Usually, students get these questions wrong anyways, so it's better to move on and answer other, easier questions.

3. If you have about 8-9 minutes for the last passage, don't read the entire passage; just read the "blurb" and start to answer the questions that have "line references" first. You'll be reading parts of passage to answer those questions anyways, so you'll start to get a better sense of what the passage is mainly about. Then, move on to the big picture questions; if you have time, read the first and last paragraphs (those are usually where the main points of the essay are).

Remember

Your goal is to finish one passage in 13 minutes.

Don't spend too much time on a single question (over 2 minutes is too much time); when you are stuck between two answers, eliminate the answer that sounds "worse." See if there is a reason NOT to choose an answer.

Also, try taking a test without reading the passage first. You don't have to do this for all passages; maybe just for the ones that you struggle with the most (history...etc.). After reading the "blurb" and part of the first paragraph....if it seems too challenging like you don't know what the heck the author is talking about....then switch strategies and go to the questions first. It'll be okay. No need to panic. There are plenty of students who score high without reading first.

Test out these strategies and let me know how it goes k?

You got this!
