I again have a question for the summary question.
I assumed 1 was wrong because of, "first Europeans'. There is no mention of this part, though I can make a logical conclusion.
But as I read the entire answer choice, 4,5,6 was obviously factually wrong.
Therefore I chose 1 for the answer.
Is 1 being just well paraphrased?
hm... I wouldn't say that option choice 1 was tricky.
After all, the passage says in the 2nd paragraph "speculation began AS SOON AS outsiders encountered Pacific islanders.
So, yes, speculation began when the 1st Europeans encountered them.
