Citing Evidences SAT Level Exercises Part 2 33

For questions 8 and 9, I chose answers A and B respectively.
The questions were:
8) According to the passage, which of the following is a a benefit of Fragrant Moss over its competitors?
A. Fragrant Moss smells better because it only uses sun, water, and carbon dioxide.
B. Other fragrances can’t be used in bathrooms.
C. Other fragrances cost more because it’s more complex to make
D. Fragrant Moss doesn’t undergo any chemical reactions that are emit harmful substances.

9) Which choice provides the best evidence for the answer to the previous question?
A. Lines 9-12 (“This...market”)
B. Lines 26-28 (“Well...particularly strong”)
C. Lines 29-31 (“It...fragrances”)
D. Lines 34-36 ("This... chemicals")

Starting with question 9, I agree with the fact that answer choices A and C are a bit off, but I personally feel like answer choice B is a stronger answer than D. The question wanted to find us a quote that showed a benefit over its competitors, but answer D did not. Instead, it focused on the weakness of traditional ones, which doesn’t necessarily mean that the new Fragrant Mosses are better than them. Also, in the video, Mr.Jin said to examine the surrounding sentences, or the context. With the context, it certainly does make more sense than just simply using the weakness of the traditional ones as the answer. Then, shouldn’t the answer include all of the context? Or shouldn’t be the next sentence be a better choice, which is “In contrast, the scent produced by Fragrant Moss is created using only sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water.” I just think that answer choice D is a bit incomplete answer.
For question 8, I got question 9 wrong, so I automatically got this question wrong as well.

I still quite don’t understand why D is a better answer than B. Thank you so much.

Hey student!

Thank you for the wonderful question; you wrote a very articulate explanation of your thoughts, and I truly appreciate students who do this.

I know where precisely what the problem is.  Your answer to question #9 (B) is a good answer, BUT it does NOT match quesiton #8 (A), which is why this answer pair does not work. There is one major problem with question 8 (A) - the phrase "smells better because it uses...". The reading passage never 1. compares the smell of Fragrant Moss to traditional fragrances and 2. the pleasant smell is NOT THE RESULT OF using only sun, water, and CO2. So, because this answer choice is not true and not supported by the passage, you must eliminate it, which means answer choice (B) in question 9 can't work either.

The SAT is known to trick students in this way. The tip that I can give you is to read the answer choices more carefully and with a critical eye. Watch out for comparative + cause and effect language.

Although you are right to think that answer choice (D) in question 9 is a bit incomplete, it is the only answer that works given the answers in question 8.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks again for the amazing question. Keep moving forward! You got this!
