Hey Student! =)
Thank you again for your insightful question. They really help me to improve my explanations.
Sometimes I don't spend enough time to explain every answer choices in too much detail on video because,
otherwise, the videos would be hours long! haha...
So I'm glad that I am getting feedback from bright students like yourself to let me know
that I need to explain things a bit further. =)
Answer Choice B says:
B) the colonies already have more freedom than they should.
This implies that George's opinion about Americans.....that Americans should NOT have as much liberty....that Americans freedoms should be CONTROLLED or LIMITED
However, the reading passage does not indicate that, nor does it imply what B) says.
George says, "No people (Americans) have ever enjoyed more happiness, or lived under a milder Government"
Here, all the only things that can be implied from this statement is...
1. Americans enjoy more happienss than the British ever did (British people never enjoyed as much happiness as the Americans do)
But happiness does not imply freedom. Just because people are free doesn't mean they are happy. Implying so would be speculation (or "your own interpretation"). In other words, you are going beyond the scope of what the passage says.
2. The British Government has been most forgiving (lenient) with the Americans...
Again, just because the Americans live under a lenient government doesn't mean Americans DESERVE LESS FREEDOM. The way that things are (reality) versus what people believe (opinion) are two different things. And treating them as equal would be a mistake on the SAT.
This is why B) is not correct. D), however, is clearly stated in the passage, right?
"But so daring and desperate is the spirit of those leaders, whose object has always been dominion and power, that they have now openly renounced all allegiance to the Crown"...clearly indicates that American leaders' goal (object) has always been to have authority (dominion and power).
To summarize: if you have an answer choice that is clearly stated in the passage vs an answer that would require you to make a big inference based on the words given in the passage, stick with the answer that is directly given. Usually, the other answer choice is SPECULATION (own interpretation) and you are going beyond the bounds of what you can infer on the SAT.
Hope this helps~
Keep Moving Forward!
