제목 [Jin Bae] Question for writing and language
Writing and language practice test 2 1

Hi,

I want to ask you a question in writing and language, passage 2.

For question number 16, I think the underlined sentence should be deleted because it doesn’t show how Orozco’s preference for wandering influenced his life. The only thing that is mentioned is the fact that Orozco spotted oranges and photographed them. I think it doesn’t match with the “influence” of art.

I actually chose C for the question number 16. I think the underlined sentence blurs the point about Orozco’s studios, which is mentioned after the underlined sentence.

Can you provide extra explanation about this?

Thank you !!!

Hey SoYoung!!

Thank you for the wonderful question! So I call these types of questions - where two answers say "Yes/Keep" and two say "No/Delete" -  "Relevance Questions." The thing you have to make sure to do consistently when answering these questions is to follow a specific process - a series of steps you take before jumping into the answer. The first step is to determine the Main Idea (the topic) of the paragraph, which can usually be determined based off of the first and last sentences of the paragraph. In this case, the first sentence says, "Orozco's nomadic lifestyle began to strongly inform his work around this time." Nomadic means wandering from place to place, so we know that this type of lifestyle impacted his work. From the last few sentences, we also know that Orozco worked alone in his studio --> which allowed him to remain "free to create art WHERE and WHEN he chose," further reinforcing the idea mentioned in the first sentence. So, the main topic of this paragraph relates to his wandering lifestlye and how it affected his work.

Cool. Step one is done. Make sure to do this step before you look at the answer choices. Next, we want to summarize the topic of the underlined portion, which says 1. he wandered through Brazil 2. he took pics of oranges. Essentially, what this sentence is "doing" is provides an example of a time he wandered and created art. Right? Good.

Next step is to ask if the topic of this underlined portion is RELEVANT (ON-TOPIC) to the topic of the paragraph. In this case, it is clearly ON-TOPIC. So, cross out C) and D), which say DELETE.

Last step is to look at the reasons why the information should be KEPT. B) is wrong because the underlined portion doesn't talk about the reasons (WHY) he became interested in photography. The underlined portion simply gives us an example of a time when Orozco's wandering led to his creating art, which is along the lines of what answer choice A) says.

Hope this helps! Make sure you are working through these types of questions systematically (in a particular process); otherwise, you may fall into many traps. I actually cover each of the question types and concepts tested on SAT Writing in another course if that is something you'd be interested in exploring. No worries if you are not. =)

Again, thank you for the question and KEEP MOVING FORWARD! You got this!
