Atomic Structue FRQ Further work 2008 #5 question d 1
작성자 apr*** 등록일 2020-05-01 오후 9:08:40

The question reads.

Xenon can react with oxygen and fluorine to form compounds such as XeO3 and XeF4. In the boxes provided, draw the complete Lewis electron-dot diagram for each of the molecules represented below.

I do not have problem with the Lewis-dot structure for XeF4.

However,

The scoring guide only shows one Lewis structure for the XeO3 with single bonds between each three Oxygen atom and the Xeon atom in the middle (while not even showing the charge of the molecule!!!).

Can we draw different Lewis structure for the XeO3? Such as the one with double bonds between each three Oxygen atom and the Xeon atom.

Hello

The one you explained about XeO3 is more correct.

But for the Lewis dot diagrams, collegeboard doesnt require you to show all possible Lewis dot structures.

Some times, they give you some options for the same formula and let you guys choose one for the better formal charges.

For the matter of formal charges, the one with all double bonds between oxygen and xenon have all zero formal charges on each atom. However, it has expanded octet, while the one with all single bonds satisfy octet rule.

Collegeboard only shows you the octet-satisfying Lewis dot structure, but either one is correct.

:)
