안녕하세요 테드 선생님!

강의를 듣다가 이거에 의문이 가서 그런데 도와주세요!

"Life on the Mississippi" passage에서 question #8에 왜 답이 d가 아니라 c인지 모르겠습니다. Although the previous answer from question number 7 of narrator's main emotion that he felt towards the engineer was "animosity and envy", I personally think that choice D fits more as line 56-58 says that the boat blew "at last" showing the narrator's personal satisfaction he felt as the boat blew up, thus, demonstrating the envy and animosity that the narrator personally felt. But choice C only shows that the engineer was admired and hated by his comrades, clearly showing their emotion but vaguely of the narrator's emotion.

Hello, thanks for asking the question.

You have a point saying that D shows the emotion of the narrator. He definitely is vexed - annoyed - and hates the engineer. However, the point is why he feels this way toward the engineer.

In the beginning paragraphs of the passage, we know that the thing the narrator most wants is to work on a steam boat. He has rather naiive dreams about how "cool" it would be to work on a boat. And then, the engineer appears and "shook the bottom of the (narrator)'s sunday school teachings" By this we know that the reason the narrator hates the engineer so much is because the engineer's life is exactly what the narrator wants. We see that the narrator is blind with jealousy and envy. Therefore, the choice that mentions "envy" is the best for the answer. So, the answer is "animosity and envy".

Hope this helps.
