For ex: Jimmy got a score of 92 on a math test. Standard deviation is 6 and the mean score was 80. What is Jimmy's Z score?

In this case, since Jimmy scored better than the mean score, you would obviously have to go up on the normal curve.

Standard deviation is 6, he scored 92 and the mean score is 80, just simple math. 

With the standard deviation of 6, you would have to go up twice to be at 92. So the Z score is +2.

It depends on the question so you have to read the question carefully!
