Title [Jin Bae] (Digtial SAT) Semicolon question
Digital SAT Writing Foundations: Concept Lectures 6
Author AAA*** Date Posted 2023-07-11 오전 12:57:14

Hello, Jin 선생님 !!!!

I've listened to your "Digital SAT Writing Foundations: Concept Lectures" and started practicing grammar questions on practice tests and the bluebook. As you can see in the image, page 27 of the grammar workbook shows that the semicolon is used with Con Adv like "IC; Con Adv  IC ".

I looked over the practice tests that I took 2 months ago and tried to figure out what mistakes I made.

As I was resolving the practice test questions, I applied the semicolon rule in the workbook and believed "antiquity; however," was right but the correct answer was "antiquity, however;"

I've read through the explanations but still don't understand why the correct answer is the correct answer. Can you help me?

Also, thank you for your lectures, I didn't know a single grammar rule and had hard time-solving grammar questions, but through your lectures, I improved so much !! (I got over 15 grammar questions wrong and minimized them to 6-8).

그리고 do you know of more practice questions I can practice? I'm almost done with the Digital SAT Writing Foundations: Practice Test (College Board 1~4) lecture and want to minimize getting questions wrong, and I can't find resources other than Masterprep and College Board... there are not many resources for DSAT ...T-T ; (죄송해요ㅜㅜ)

Thank you again!

Hi student!!

Thank you so much for the kind words! =))

And great question! It's a tricky concept, and it ultimately comes down to where you place the semicolon.

Let me explain...

If I had the sentence

I am Korean; however, I don't like kimchee.

Notice how the "however" is part of the second sentence, which makes sense because you are contrasting the fact that "I don't like kimchee" with the fact that "I am Korean" (the first sentence.

BUT....

If I wrote this...

I am Korean, however; I don't like kimchee.

Now, "however" is part of the first sentence (I am Korean). But this is not grammatically correct because there is no sentence that comes BEFORE it. In other words, you are not CONTRASTING the right thing.

Can you see how this makes NO SENSE?

Therefore, I know that the word "however" has to be part of the SECOND independent clause, not the FIRST.

So now, you just have to determine where to put the word "however." If the second IC contasts the first IC, then you will have the following...

IC; however, IC

But if the first IC contrasts the previous sentence, you will have....

IC. IC, however; IC.

That's what Question 26 is testing you on. Your job is to determine which two ICs are being contrasted and to put the semicolon in the appropriate place.

So either IC, however; IC  and  IC; however, IC  are grammatically correct but it DEPENDS on the sentences that are written.

Just know that

IC, however, IC  is NOT correct because it creates a RUN-ON sentence.

Hope this helps!

To answer your other question, I'm working on creating some awesome DSAT products for students just like you! =) I'm currently in the planning phase and will get those products out as soon as possible. Personally, I don't trust too many "non official" sources out there in the market, which is why I want to create my own stuff. =) Currently, I have a DSAT practice questions course I created on masterprep that includes 250 questions I wrote, but nothing else =(.

I'll let you know when they come out k? =))

Add me on Kakaotalk: jbae328

And I JUST started a YouTube channel called "Jin Teaches..."

if you subscribe, you can get notified when new videos come out. I'm planning to create 100% FREE content until the end of the year, so your question and timing are GREAT!

Take care and best of luck on your journey!

You Got This!
