D.SAT Grammar 09

Hello Mr.Jin Bae! I have a few questions about essential and nonessential..

First of all, do we consider other relative clauses except for "which" clause and "that" clause as essential or nonessential? The textbook says it really depends on, but it does not explain in detail. Moreover, the lecture does not include this part, though you explained everything else about essential and nonessential in other chapters.. If you really don't mind, could you pls elaborate this part?

Second question is.. how exactly do we connect an IC after DC?

In the lecture, you have briefly mentioned that normally we put nothing after IC when DC follows right away. However, I saw some other teachers always using commas between IC and the DC that comes right after. For ex) "I was doing my homework, while Tom was playing a game." In this sentence, "I was doing my hw" must be Ic and "while Tom was playing a game" must be subordinating clause, which is DC, right? Could you please explain me why do we have comma between them?

By the way, I really love your lecture and it is one of the best lectures I have ever listened to, thank you so much!

Hey student!

Thank you for the kind words--that's very generous of you to say.

Also, GREAT questions. To explain essential vs nonessential relative clauses for the relative pronoun "who." (the SAT will mostly test "who") will take a LOT of explaining here. So instead, I attached a great handout to explain essential or nonessential in DEPTH. There are questions and answer explanations to apply your learning. Emotion Icon

Second question: this question is pretty straightforward. Let me explain.

Whenever a dependent clause (DC) comes before an independent clause (IC), a comma will be placed to separate the two clauses.

Ex.

DC, IC.

When I run, I listen to audiobooks.

As soon as I got home, I went to bed.

NOTE: the commas is ALWAYS necessary when a DC comes BEFORE an IC. However, when a DC appears AFTER the IC, a comma isn't necessary (although sometimes you'll see one). But don't worry since the SAT doesn't test this concept.

Ex.

IC DC

I listen to audiobooks when I run.

I went to bed as soon as I got home.

Hope this helps!

Wishing you the BEST of luck on your exam!

Keep Moving Forward!

You Got This!
